Third Grade - Community Service Learning

On the morning of Wednesday, May 25, 2016, Mrs. Tamar Philbrook's third grade class visited Pelletier Florist in Fort Kent for their annual service learning project.  The 18 students were welcomed off the bus by volunteering family members, Pelletier Florist owner Craig Morneault, and the Superintendent of Schools.  The goal for the students was to prepare three flower pots each that would later be delivered to community locations in an effort to spread beauty across the community.

In order to prepare their flower pots, students were provided with a price list for flowers and were informed that they had to stay within budget.  The foundational math skills the students learn and practice every day in the classroom came to life in this real world use of mathematical practice. Students shopped, tallied, calculated, and beautified all morning long!

This project could not have been done without the support of volunteer family members, the accommodating staff at Pelletier Florist, and the innovative project idea of their teacher.  MSAD27 not only supports efforts such as this to give back to the community, we encourage community businesses to partner with the schools in an effort to provide educational experiences that extend beyond the classroom.

MSAD27 thanks the students of Mrs. Tamar's class for helping our community be a more beautiful place to work and live!
