Factors leading to today's school cancelation

When looking outside this morning, it may be difficult to understand why school was canceled.  The following list are factors that led to this morning's decision to cancel school:

1. Road Conditions: SAD27 busses take to the road as early as 5:20 in the morning.  At that time this morning, many of the secondary roads in the district had yet to be plowed.  Those roads that had been plowed were very dangerous with slush and ice buildup.  Reports of downed trees and flooding had also started to come in.

2. Power Outages:  Most of the district was without power this morning.  Reports of power outages included St. John Road, Caribou Road, Sly Brook Road, Strip Road, Route 11 going to Eagle Lake, and many more.

3. Roof Leaks: Due to the wet, heavy snow, and the layers of ice buildup, many of the roof drains on Community High School were plugged which resulted in several roof leaks around the school.

4. Area School Closings: In addition to SAD27, schools in SAD33, Madawaska, RSU 29, and others closed today with a number of districts choosing to delay several hours.

We will always do our best to make the best decision given the information we have.  Student and staff safety are the primary concern in all decisions made regarding school cancelations.
